MEN IN THE CITIES

Framed by two violent deaths – the apparently inexplicable suicide of a young gay man, and the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich in May 2013 – Men in the Cities is a compelling piece about harm and complicity, and about the forces that shape our relationships.
Through fractured snapshots of seemingly disconnected lives, the play presents a challenging but radically humane portrait of how we live now.
Has moments of such staggering potency that it feels like the air is on fire – Time Out
A fierce, poetic and troubled dramatic monologue which conjures up a range of characters adrift in 21st century city… destined to become a quiet classic of post-social theatre – The Scotsman
Goode’s writing is excellent, frequently funny and often unexpected… it offers something raw and honest that is exactly what theatre should be – The List
A fractious, mesmerising tale… the piece builds, like a symphony, to a shattering emotional climax – The Telegraph
This is a masterly piece, beautifully observed – Financial Times
Chris Goode is a British writer, director, performer and musician, hailed by The Guardian as “a theatre maker of infinite talent and infinite compassion”. He has amassed a significant body of unpredictable work in diverse formats: from large-scale theatre-based projects such as The Consolations (1999) and Speed Death of the Radiant Child (2007), to intimate solo storytelling pieces like Kiss of Life (2002) and We Must Perform A Quirkafleeg! (2006), one of a series of performances made specifically for audiences’ own homes; and from script-based pieces like King Pelican (2009, nominated for a TMA Award for Best New Play) to more obviously experimental works such as Hey Mathew (2008), and Glass House (2009), a performance installation for Deloitte Ignite at the Royal Opera House. Recent projects include Monkey Bars (2012), Infinite Lives (2014), Mad Man (2014), e Men in Cities (2014).
A regular performer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, he has won four Fringe First awards for Men in the Cities, Monkey Bars, Neutrino and Kiss of Life. He also won the Headlong/Gate New Directions Award for his radical version of Chekhov, …SISTERS, at the Gate Theatre.
